Now is the time for loading the kids in your Subaru for holiday travels. Travel safety is important and if a child safety seat is not installed correctly, your child's safety could be in danger at this happy (albeit potentially stressful) time. Every car seat has different and specific installation instructions that need to be followed.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind when installing a car seat.

  1. Place the car seat in the rear seat of your vehicle and strictly follow the manufacturer's installation directions.
  2. Always read the child car seat instruction manual and the portion of your Subaru Owner's Manual about car seat installation. Each and every child safety car seat needs to be installed using either the lower anchors of the Subaru LATCH system or the rear seat belt to secure it in place. If you choose to use a seat belt to install your car seat, pay very strict attention to the instructions in your Subaru Owner's Manual about locking your seat belt in the vehicle. Because every child car seat and vehicle is different, it is extremely important to follow all of the instructions carefully.
  3. The car seat must be secured tightly in the vehicle. It should not be able to move side to side or front to back more than one inch.
  4. If it is a forward-facing seat and has a top tether strap, connect the strap to the tether anchor and tighten. This step is very important as it limits forward head movement in a crash.
  5. If it is a rear-facing seat, make sure the car seat is installed at the correct recline angle. Most child safety car seats have built in angle indicators or adjusters that help you with this step.
